J4 Tipper Body Certification & Engineering
Kadtec Engineering provides J4 tipper body design certification and engineering in accordance with VSB6 Modification Code J4 – Tipper Bodies (Design).
We work with truck body builders and manufacturers to assess existing tipper designs, develop new designs and prepare the engineering documentation required for J4 certification.
Our focus is on providing practical engineering solutions that allow manufacturers to produce strong, compliant and repeatable tipper body designs.

J4 Tipper Certification
VSB6 Modification Code J4 covers the design and engineering of truck tipper bodies.
Kadtec can assess both new and existing tipper body designs and provide the engineering calculations, analysis and documentation required to demonstrate compliance.
The assessment can include:
- Tipper body structural strength
- Floor and side structure
- Subframe design
- Hoist mounting structure
- Rear tipping pivots
- Tailgate hinges and locking mechanisms
- Welded connections
- Material specifications
- Hydraulic system requirements
- Body safety prop
- Hydraulic burst protection
- Warning devices and safety systems
- Structural calculations
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Existing Tipper Body Designs
Kadtec can assess existing tipper designs that are already being manufactured.
Where the existing design is structurally suitable, the objective is to retain proven components and fabrication methods rather than unnecessarily redesigning the entire body.
If changes are required, Kadtec can provide practical engineering recommendations to achieve J4 compliance while minimising unnecessary manufacturing changes.
New Tipper Body Design
Kadtec can also assist manufacturers with development of new tipper body designs.
- 3D CAD design
- Structural calculations
- Finite Element Analysis
- Subframe design
- Hoist mounting design
- Rear pivot design
- Tailgate and locking system design
- Weld and connection design
- Hydraulic and safety system review
- Manufacturing drawings
- J4 certification documentation
Tipper Structure & FEA
Finite Element Analysis can be used to assess highly loaded areas of the tipper structure that may not be adequately represented by simple beam calculations.
Typical areas assessed include:
- Hoist mounting structure
- Rear pivot structure
- Main floor rails
- Crossmembers
- Tailgate structure
- Tailgate hinges and locking mechanisms
- Local reinforcement and welded connections
The analysis can be used to identify areas requiring reinforcement while avoiding unnecessary additional weight elsewhere in the body.
Tipper Safety Systems
J4 certification also requires consideration of the safety systems associated with the tipping operation.
Depending on the design, this may include:
- Body prop or mechanical body support
- Hydraulic burst protection
- Hoist and hydraulic component installation
- Tailgate locking arrangements
- Warning systems
- Controls and operating safety
- Prevention of unintended body movement
Kadtec can review these systems as part of the overall J4 engineering assessment.
J4 and J1 Certification
J4 relates primarily to the design of the tipper body.
When the completed body is installed onto a particular truck, the body installation and chassis mounting are generally assessed separately under VSB6 Modification Code J1.
For Victorian vehicles, Kadtec can also provide VASS certification for the associated vehicle modifications where applicable.
This allows the J4 body design and the final truck installation to be assessed as part of a coordinated engineering process.
J4 Certification Documentation
The engineering package can include:
- J4 engineering report
- Structural calculations
- FEA results
- Manufacturing drawings
- Material specifications
- Weld requirements
- Hydraulic and safety system requirements
- Design limitations
- Approved body configurations
- Inspection requirements
For manufacturers producing multiple similar bodies, the engineering documentation can be structured around a defined range of approved configurations rather than requiring the complete design process to be repeated for every individual body.
Need a J4 Tipper Design Certified?
Kadtec Engineering works directly with truck body builders and manufacturers to develop practical and repeatable J4-certified tipper designs.
